Significance of Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple: The importance of Baidyanath Jyotirlinga is that the main temple is beyond historical dates. Devotees from the age of Ram, the king of Ayodhya, come to see it. The top has three ascending-shaped gold vessels set compactly, which were donated by the Maharaja of Gidhaur, Raja Puran Singh. ✽ Apart from these pitcher-shaped utensils, there is a 'Panchkula' (five knives in the shape of a trident), which is rare. ✽ The lingam is of a cylindrical shape which is about 5 inches in diameter and is located about 4 inches from the center of a large slab of basalt. ✽ Devotees also believe that Shiva first transformed himself into a Jyotirlinga on the night of Ardra Nakshatra, thus having special reverence for the Jyotirlinga. ✽ The Jyotirlinga is the supreme partless reality, from which Shiva partially appears. Jyotirlinga temples are thus the places where Shiva appeared as a fiery pillar of light. Story Behind Baidyanath Jyotirlinga: The story behind the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga is associated with the divine healing powers of Lord Shiva. According to mythology, Lord Shiva assumed the form of a doctor (Vaidya) and came to earth to heal Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. It is believed that the place where Lord Shiva appeared as a Vaidya and cured Ravana is the site of the Baidyanath Temple. The word "Baidyanath'' itself means "Lord of Physicians." According to mythology during Baidyanath Jyotirlinga's transportation by demon king Ravana to Lanka, midway on his route was this holy land. As depicted Ravana had got this Shivalinga as a boon by offering extreme meditation and had he installed this Jyotirlinga in Lanka no one would have succeeded in killing him. Due to Ravana’s cruelty lord Shiva handed over the Jyotirlinga to him on the condition that if he would ever put the Jyotirlinga on the ground, it would not be possible to lift it again. During the course of his journey, with the intent to create hurdles, deities got water and lord Barun entered into Ravana’s belly with its effect, Ravana felt pee experience and was compelled to land for being free from the natural call. He landed down his Puspak Vimana and gave the Jyotirlinga to a nearby herd boy who was lord Vishnu in disguise. After having been freed from the natural call as Ravana came to take Jyotirlinga, he was astonished to see that the herd boy had disappeared and the Jyotirlinga was put on the ground. As per conditions, Ravana could not lift the Jyotirlinga after making so many attempts. Consequently, with extreme anger, he thrust the linga with his thumb and went away. In the original Jyotirlinga, the mid part of it was warped.
