A Day of Gratitude for Nature and Ancestors: Hariyali Amavasya

Hariyali Amavasya, a vibrant Hindu festival, falls on the new moon day (Amavasya) in the holy month of Shravan. As the monsoon arrives, blanketing the land in lush greenery, this festival is a time to appreciate nature's beauty and pay respect to our ancestors. This Year 2024 Hariyali Amavasya will celebrate on 4 Aug 2024.

A Special Day in Shravan Month

Unlike other Amavasyas, Hariyali Amavasya holds greater significance. It falls during Shravan, a month dedicated to Lord Shiva. During this monsoon season, the festival becomes a joyous celebration of nature's vibrant greens. Observed with great enthusiasm in North Indian states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, Hariyali Amavasya has various names across the country. In Maharashtra, it's known as Gatari Amavasya, while Andhra Pradesh calls it Chukkal Amavasya and Odisha celebrates it as Chitlagi Amavasya. The diverse traditions associated with this festival reflect the rich tapestry of Indian culture.

Honoring Ancestors and Seeking Blessings on Hariyali Amavsya

Hariyali Amavasya is a day to remember and honor our ancestors. Devotees wake up early, bathe, and perform puja (worship) to seek their blessings. Special food offerings are prepared for Brahmins as well.

Another important aspect of the festival is worshipping Lord Shiva for wealth and prosperity. Chanting specific mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva is considered particularly auspicious. Special rituals are organized in Shiva temples, allowing devotees to express their gratitude and seek blessings. Interestingly, women pray for their husbands' well-being on this day. Food is only consumed after completing the puja rituals.

Planting Trees: A Legacy for the Future on Amavasya

As the name suggests, 'Hariyali' translates to greenery. This festival coincides perfectly with the monsoon season, making it an ideal time to plant trees. Planting a tree on Hariyali Amavasya and nurturing it is believed to bring merit. Our ancestors understood the importance of trees, which provide us with life-giving oxygen. Here are some interesting suggestions for planting trees based on Vedic astrology:

For good health: Amla, Palash, Brahmi, Arjun, Tulsi, and Sunflower
For good luck: Arjun, Ashok, Coconut, or Banyan
For children: Bilva, Neem, Nagkeshar, Peepal, or Ashwagandha
For happiness: Kadamba, Neem, or shady trees
To attract happiness: Parijat, Mogra, Ratrani, and Rose

How to celebrate Hariyali Amavasya

Devotees of Lord Krishna visit the Banke Bihari temple, Dwarkadhish temple, and Vrindavan for special darshan (holy sight) of the deities.
