The month of Sawan is a month of purity and festivals. In this sacred month, Hariyali Teej is celebrated on the third day of the Shukla Paksha. In many places, this festival is also known as Shravani Teej, Kajri, or Kajli Teej. In 2024, this festival will be celebrated on August 7. As the name suggests, nature adorns itself with a green cover to welcome the coming days. Women decorate swings, creating a joyful atmosphere. People feel a sense of enthusiasm. On Hariyali Teej, women observe a fast and worship Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, seeking blessings for auspiciousness.

How to Perform Worship on Hariyali Teej

- This fast is primarily observed by women, though men can also observe it for the prosperity of their married life.

- Those wishing to observe the fast should wake up early, bathe, wear clean clothes, and take a vow in front of God.

- The person fasting should create idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati using sand or black clay.

- Additionally, an idol of Lord Ganesha should be made. A betel nut can also be worshipped as Lord Ganesha.

- Perform an abhishek (ritual bathing) of Goddess Parvati and the Lord with pure water. Offer clothes, food, incense, and naivedya (food offerings) to the deities.

- Offer auspicious items to Goddess Parvati.

- Listen to the story of Hariyali Teej.

- Consume fruits at one time during the day.

Know the Story of Hariyali Teej Vrat


The story of Hariyali Teej is essential for the fulfillment of the fast's vow. It is said that Lord Shiva narrated this story to Goddess Parvati. According to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati took 107 births to attain Him as her husband. In the 108th birth, she was born in the house of the king of mountains, and her desire to marry Lord Bholenath was fulfilled. Lord Shiva explained that Goddess Parvati underwent rigorous penance in each birth. Upon her birth, she constructed a Shiva Lingam from sand or clay on the third day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Sawan and worshipped it, after which her wish was fulfilled. Lord Shiva was pleased, and their marriage took place. Therefore, this date was declared special by Mahadev, granting that anyone who observes this fast with full devotion will be relieved of stress and blessed with a happy married life.

Sinjara in Rajasthan


The celebration of Hariyali Teej is particularly special in Rajasthan. On this day, gifts are sent from the father’s side to the daughter’s in-laws. This is known as the Sinjara festival. Women wear green Leheriya sarees and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
