Shani Jayanti, also known as Shani Amavasya, marks the birth anniversary of Lord Shani, the son of Suryadev (Sun God). He is considered the ruling deity of Saturday and the planet Saturn.

When is Shani Jayanti Celebrated?

The date of Shani Jayanti varies slightly depending on the calendar system followed. According to the North Indian Purnimant calendar, it falls on the Amavasya (new moon) tithi of the Jyeshtha month. In the South Indian Amavasyant calendar, it falls on the Amavasya tithi of the Vaishakha month. While the month names differ, both calendars observe Shani Jayanti on the same day.

Significance of Shani Jayanti

In many regions, Shani Jayanti coincides with the Vat Savitri Vrat, a holy vow observed by women during Jyeshtha Amavasya. Devotees observe fasts (Upvaas) to appease Lord Shani and visit Shani temples to seek his blessings. Lord Shani is believed to be a fair judge, bestowing good fortune and luck upon those who please him. Conversely, those lacking his favor may toil for years without reaping the rewards of their hard work.

Observances on Shani Jayanti

Shani Jayanti is considered an auspicious day to perform Havan, Homam, and Yagya ceremonies to appease Lord Shani. Shani Tailabhishekam (oil ablution) and Shani Shanti Puja (peace puja) are the most important rituals performed on this day. These observances aim to lessen the effects of Shani Dosha, also known as Sade Sati, an astrological phenomenon believed to bring challenges and hardships.
